Bio

Born in Georgia, John Springer grew up in North Carolina and attended the College of Sewanee in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee where he studied Geology and Biology. After college, John headed to Wyoming and spent several years as an outdoor educator with the National Outdoor Leadership School guiding wilderness trips throughout the Northwest United States. John has practiced painting and drawing since childhood, and it was during the early years of his adulthood spent in nature that his artwork became the primary pursuit. John’s career as a painter grew within the community of Jackson Hole where he featured his work of the surrounding landscape. The nineteenth century European artists were always of interest to him. In 2019, he ventured to France for a pivotal summer painting from the same motifs of Van Gogh, Cezanne and Monet. The experience of painting directly from nature had a powerful influence on John’s practice. For several years in Wyoming he continued this approach, painting within his native landscape of the Rocky Mountains. In 2021, John returned to France where he achieved a Master of Fine Arts degree in Aix-en-Provence. At present, John lives and works in France while traveling seasonally to the United States to paint and promote his artwork.

ARTIST STATEMENT

By observing particular patterns within nature I seek to render visually through painting and drawing the universal truths of the human-environment relationship. I seek to capture the fleeting and compare it to that which is timeless. My mission is to continue the tradition of landscape art which is grounded in giving meaning to our existence. It is a perpetual development of a keener vision, for it is only through seeing that I can better understand and express an authentic experience with the world through my art.
